CHALLENGE
Skimming the edge of the Union Canal, Lower Gilmore Place’s 5 peaks stand tall above the heritage walls of the canal. The brief was to create a student co-living offer with well-being at it’s heart, branding and wayfinding strategy and design for the development. The development itself is respectful in scale and more domestic in nature to attune better with its water edged setting. 69 perfectly formed student living apartments nestle in the Lochrin Basin some with views of the castle and the remaining overlooking the south facing courtyard and garden space. The studios are enhanced by bright multifunctional amenity spaces bringing students together and adding vibrancy to the street edge. The face of student living is new, fresh and expertly detailed so much so that all accommodation was let prior to completion. The studio apartments boast, ensuite shower rooms, bijou kitchens, dining space, work space and a double bed, all enriched with ample storage. Students can have peace and quiet in their apartments or come together in the games room, cinema room, private dining room or the multiple seating options provided in the main amenity space. The vibe is fresh, warm and inviting and allows for a multitude of different uses at different times of the day.
APPROACH
The primary goal of our project was to craft a dynamic co-living environment tailored to students' well-being while appealing to a diverse demographic. Our apartment design prioritises tranquility and relaxation by seamlessly blending natural elements like lush plants and abundant natural light. Each aspect is meticulously curated, with bespoke joinery maximising storage solutions within the apartments. Notably, our unique robe detail serves dual functionality as a high-level storage cupboard and a subtle yet functional backdrop for the double bed, complete with a small recessed shelf equipped with a reading light and power socket. Storage within the bed's base ensures ample space for luggage, while a private ensuite and fully equipped kitchenette elevate the living experience to a luxurious standard, promoting comfort and quality of life. Natural materials were continued throughout the signage manufacturing and a gentle colour palette with vibrant pops of red was used to facilitate a stress free user journey while adding energy to the overall brand.
In our communal spaces, a vibrant palette invites residents to engage and energise. On the ground floor, residents can choose from a variety of shared and private social settings, all furnished for relaxation and focus. Adjacent to these spaces, the rear games and TV room complements a private dining area, catering to residents' desires for both community and privacy. This thoughtful design acknowledges the preferences of mature students, providing options for socialising or hosting gatherings with family and friends.
RESULTS
Our client Glencairn Properties prioritise ongoing improvement and responsiveness to residents' needs. Regular feedback sessions ensure that their accommodation consistently meets the expectations of the students.
