Great wayfinding isn't simply about helping people find their table. It's about helping them understand where they are. For The Keelson, our role extended beyond the interior design to creating a layered visual language that strengthened the venue's identity throughout the guest journey.
Working alongside an existing brand identity, we developed a series of environmental graphics, interpretive details and placemaking elements that bring Leith's maritime heritage into the space in a subtle, contemporary way.Rather than relying on overt nautical theming, the approach focused on carefully considered moments of discovery. Etched glass screens reference historic maritime patterns, stained-glass fanlights frame views towards The Shore, bespoke menu design reflects the character of the venue, while curated artwork, interpretive displays and maritime artefacts quietly reinforce the narrative throughout the interior.
Each element was designed to feel as though it belonged to the building rather than being applied afterwards. Brass detailing, timber frames, heritage-inspired typography, carefully selected materials and finely curated artifacts created consistency across every touchpoint, allowing guests to absorb the story naturally as they move through the space.
The result is an environment where branding, graphics and interiors work together as one experience. Rather than acting as decoration, every detail contributes to a stronger sense of place, helping transform a beautifully designed interior into a pub that feels rooted in Leith and connected to its waterfront setting.
